Fantastic to chat everything headtorches this lunchtime live on YouTube with my amazing audience, thanks guys for all your great questions! Enjoy your nighttime running! (Links to my fave headtorches below, scroll down)

I’m live every Tuesday at 1pm (UK time) where I show you what running gear I’m testing each week and answer your questions about it. Join me next week!

In this film I cover how to choose a headtorch or headlamp – what features to look for as a runner, and which ones I use most for both road and trail running.

Then I answer everyone’s great questions, share some advice and there are some fantastic tips from the audience too (especially for foggy running in Dartmoor!).

Lastly I run through some of the key features of my Petzl, Silva, Alpkit and Exposure Lights heartorches/headlamps.

If you have anymore questions do write them in the comments below. Enjoy your evening running now the nights have got dark!

Petzl Tikka £20-£30

Light, great value, 200 lumens so just about bright enough for dusky, dim trails and roads. Can use Petzl CORE rechargeable battery (see below) or 3x AAA batteries. A good back up or emergency torch. I’d use more like a 350-400 lumen headtorch for faster running or night nav on mountain trails though.

Petzl Core rechargeable battery £23

Good for the environment to get a rechargeable battery instead of using countless AAA’s. Before you buy, do check which of Petzl’s headtorches this works with as it may not work with older models.

Or the Petzl Nao is an amazing 750 lumen headtorch with intelligent reactive lighting technology so it adjusts the brightness level depending on how much light is around you (from other runners, streetlamps etc) meaning it can last for much longer – 6.5hrs rather than 1.5hrs!

Silva Trail Runner £40-£60

A bit more expensive but worth it in my opinion for a very good quality, durable build and excellent beam design for rough trails. I really like this headtorch and it’s my go-to light for running on trails at night as it’s lightweight and bright enough for fast moving, technical trails without being too bulky on your head, and it’s really simple to use.  You can also get a battery pack with extension cord so you don’t have to carry it on your head. I have the Trail Runner 2, but they are up to version 4 now which is brighter and lasts even longer, but it’s about £60! The Trail Runner 3 goes for just over £40 so that’s a great value option if you want to save £20.

Alpkit Viper III £19 or Manta £35

Really amazing budget options here with great features (like adjustable beam, SOS setting, red flashing light at the back) that give just as good lighting as the more expensive options above but the drawback is that they are heavier and bulkier and therefore not as comfy to run in, especially for long periods of time. However, I really recommend these for beginners and those on a budget.

Exposure Lights Verso MK2 £120-150

Suuuuuper light this one, a teeny 73g, but you pay for it!

LedLenser H7.2

Someone also mentioned this brand and I don’t have one at the moment but I’ve tested them in the past and they are also very good – great value, relatively light and good burn times. I’d go for the H7.2 300 lumen model for trail running. Or H7R.2 is the rechargeable version so go for that if you can afford the extra £13 or so.
